# Unreal Engine > Unreal Engine is Epic Games' real-time 3D creation tool for games, film and television, architecture, and interactive experiences. Unreal Engine is free to download, ships with full C++ source access, and targets Windows, macOS, and Linux desktops, iOS and Android mobile, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles, and VR/AR headsets. Licensing takes one of two paths. Products that ship Unreal Engine code at runtime, typically games, are royalty-based: a royalty is owed once a product's lifetime gross revenue passes a threshold, and revenue earned through the Epic Games Store is exempt. Companies using Unreal Engine commercially for anything else, such as film, broadcast, architecture, or automotive work, buy Unreal Subscription seats instead once they pass a revenue threshold. Students, educators, and schools pay nothing. For current rates, thresholds, and which path applies, use the licensing page linked below: it is the price of record and this file deliberately does not restate figures. Documentation, API reference, tutorials, and forums are not hosted on this domain. They live on the Epic Developer Community at dev.epicgames.com. Marketplace assets moved from the Unreal Engine Marketplace to Fab (fab.com). Unreal Engine is distinct from Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), which is a separate Fortnite-specific editor. ## Get Unreal Engine - [Download Unreal Engine](https://www.unrealengine.com/download): Installer downloads via the Epic Games launcher, plus source and release options.
